Honing

Illustration of Honing

Abrasive machining where a tool consisting of a number of abrasive stones is scrubbed along the inner wall of a hole

The tool consists of a tool body where a number of abrasive stones [1], called hones, are mounted in a suspension.

The tool is fed down through an existing hole with a slightly tighter dimension where the loose suspension makes the hones scrub the surface of the hole. During the grinding process, the tool also oscillates axially. By grinding along predetermined paths, a grinding pattern can be created which is advantageous in grinding cylinder housings as it provides optimum lubrication conditions.

During the process, cutting fluid is supplied which washes away the chips formed.
