Laserskärning nyttjar ett ljus som består av parallella ljusknippen med samma våglängd vilket gör att dess stråle, i jämförelse med ljuset från tex en ficklampa, går att fokusera till en extremt liten punkt med så pass hög energitäthet att material kan smältas och förångas för att skapa ett snitt.
