The process

The workpiece is placed on the die with a rear stop position after which the punch presses a hole. The punch is then lifted and moved over the plate until the stop position again positioning the punch that knocks out another hole. The process is repeated while the plate is rotated to create a nonlinear slit.

This description applies to equipment intended solely for nibbling. Nibbling is also performed frequently as a part of Multi-operation Punching of sheet metal.
