Continuous casting

Forming process where vigorous water cooling creates a continuous cast strand of metal, which then trimmed using oxygen.

The process

Molten steel in a ladle [1] is supplied to an intermediate buffer [2], also called tundish, in order to ensure that the right amount of molten steel is available when needed. A release agent is applied while the melt passes a strongly water-cooled mold [3], which is only closed on the sides to allow the melt to be supplied from above and then carried away at its underside. Because of the strong cooling water a shell that surrounds the melt is created after passage through the mold.

After passing through the mold the melt assumes the form of a cast metal strand, which is water cooled while being transported along a conveyor belt to the cutting station [4]. When the cast strand has reached the cutting station, the metal is still very hot, which means that intersection with physical tools can be difficult. Therefore, the cast metal strand is usually cut with oxygen. When the cast strand is cut it only remains for the metal to cool and the forming process is completed.
