Bend testing

Testing method in which a loading pin bends the material for any defects to be revealed.

Illustration of Bend testing

The process

The material ends are placed on an anvil [1] without being clamped and a loading pin [2] presses the material center down slowly. Its bend continuously until a certain angle, typically 90, 120 or 180 degrees, has been achieved and any defects in the material surface in the bent areas becomes easy to identify in an inspection.

Advantages and disadvantages
In comparison with alternative methods
Easy to prepare materials
easy to carry
Ability to use manufactured materials
Do not need many samples
Complex distribution of stresses through the object
