Wire rolling

Rolling process where the workpiece is fed between two notched, rotating rollers that gradually reduces the thickness of the workpiece to create a wire.

The process

The work piece [1] is heated before processing. The rolls [2] are slit [3] to form multiple gaps between them with decreasing diameter. The workpiece which is shaped like a cylinder is fed between the rollers at the point where the roller grooves form the largest gap, because this point provides the largest possible diameter. The workpiece is then fed in through the other gaps for gradually reducing thickness until the desired thickness is achieved. The wire formed by rolling the last gap is usually collected by a rotating spool.
