Soft anodizing

Surface coating process where an aluminum workpiece that acts as the anode is subjected to voltage and is oxidized in an acidic solution which creates a corrosion-resistant and durable surface.

The process

The workpiece which acts as the anode is immersed in an acidic solution where the vessel acts as the cathode. The power source supplies dc current to the acidic solution.

The current releases hydrogen at the cathode and oxygen at the surface of the workpiece which is then oxidized to form a porous surface that is then post-processed to increase its durability.

The surface in this way becomes more corrosion resistant and durable and allows paint to stick better.
