Press brake cell

A press brake cell is a press brake assisted by a robot where automated bending of sheet metal is carried out by pressing between two tools.

The process

In a press brake cell a workpiece is placed by a robot on top of the lower tool, the pad [1]. The upper tool, the punch [2], lowers and deforms the workpiece through an applied compressive force which leads to plastic deformation.

A variety of edge press tools are available to provide many types of deformations of the workpiece.

Since press force and pressure depth are important parameters that affect the final result, today's edge presses are usually CNC-controlled and, as in this case, also robot-assisted for maximum repeatability and minimal manual handling.
