Plasma spraying

Surface coating method in which plasma is used for melting and spraying a powder onto the workpiece that is coated.

The process

An inert gas [1], usually argon, is supplied via a cathode [2] made of tungsten and past the anode made of copper [3]. The plasma was pressed at high speed out of the nozzle in which a gas-borne powder [3] is blown into the plasma jet. The hot plasma melts the powder and throws it against the workpiece to be coated.

Because of the high temperatures water [4] is used for cooling.
