Satin nickel plating

Surface coating process where the workpiece through an anode-cathode reaction in an organic or inorganic solution is coated with a layer which is semi-glossy and resembles satin.

The process

Before processing can begin the work should have been pre-treated to achieve a clean surface, common practice is by electrolytic cleaning followed by pickling and rinsing. The workpiece that acts as a cathode and the surface coating agent who acts as the anode is connected to a power source and immersed in a solution. This solution consists either of a mixture of soluble organic additives or of atomized insoluble particles. It is added as emulsified liquid additives to give the surface a certain desired consistency. An anode-cathode reaction takes place which dissolves the coating agent which migrates through the liquid to the workpiece, and a thin layer of nickel is formed on the surface.
