Rheocasting

Forming process in which an ingot is melted to a semi-solid temperature and then immediately pressed in a mold.

The process

The method belongs to the semi-solid metal casting type. The ingot to be processed must first be heated to a temperature between the metal liquidus and solidus. A typical composition of the metal is approximately 30-65% solid in which the primary phase has a globular structure to achieve a low viscosity that is necessary for the processing to occur.

The mold [1] is filled as the ingot is poured into the pressing chamber [2] and then pushed into an upper mold using a plunger [3] with the applied pressing force. When the metal fills the mold and is partially congealed the pressure in the mold is removed and the casting process is completed.

An ejector [4] ejects the workpiece from the mold.

Excess melt and in cases where the workpiece is discarded, the metal may be directly recovered by putting it back in the melt, which gives great energy gains.
