The process

Plasma cutting 3D of steel beams is performed by connecting a power source to the workpiece [1] and the cutting tool electrode [2], which often consists of tungsten. The cutting tool also includes cooling water [3] and a plasma gas [4] adapted to the workpiece.

Through the added energy, the gas is lifted to plasma state, resulting in temperatures of about 30,000 degrees Celsius. The plasma jet [5] which is ejected melts the workpiece and, due to its high movement energy, the material is removed leaving a cut.

In plasma cutting of larger beams and profiles, the workpiece is usually fixed before machining with a robot positioned tool.

Since some cross sections of beams can be difficult to access for the slightly wider plasma nozzle, some of these systems are provided with the opportunity to switch to gas cutting with significantly better access but with poorer cutting results as a result.

These machines are often integrated with a system for Automatic Line Drilling to create holes with higher tolerances and to perform threading.
