Impact extrusion

Extrusion process in which a punch hits the ingot placed in a mold, so that the ingot assumes the shape of the mold and is extruded up the side of the punch.

The process

The workpiece is a thin ingot [1], which together with a lubricant is placed in a mold [2]. The punch [3] is pressed against the ingot with an applied pressing force which forces the ingot to flow against the mold sides and up along the stroke of the punch [4].

The part is released by means of a stripper plate [5] when the punch returns to its upper position.

Advantages and disadvantages
In comparison with alternative methods
Fast production cycle
Economic mass production
Cures natural alloys that can not be treated with heat
Products that are dense and non-porous in structure
Significant heat dissipation from deformation at high speeds
Limited product size
