Gear hobbing

Chip-breaking process of gears which are milled with helical tool with cutters shaped like the tooth space.

The process

The workpiece is fixed on a vertical rotating axis and the cutting tool on a horizontally rotating axis. The rotation of these axes are coordinated so that the workpiece periphery is fed at the same rate as the motion of the cutting inserts helical form. The workpiece is usually rotated several turns to create full teeth. The angle between these shafts is adjusted depending on the angle of the gears desired.

Advantages and disadvantages
In comparison with alternative methods
Quick process
Continuous process
Simultaneous processing of multiple gear blanks
no overheating of the tool
Tight tolerances
Smooth surface
Not suitable for producing internal teeth
