Fracture Toughness Testing

Testing method in which an initial crack is subjected to a force or a bending moment so that the material's fracture toughness can be determined.

The process

Because of the appearance of internal or external cracks in a material, it can break in three basic ways. Each case is tested thereby in different ways based on a material with a certain minimum thickness and with an initial crack, applied with opposing forces so that either a bending moment, a shear force or normal force is applied by the rift. This will then grow and depending on how fast it grows and how much force is required for failure determines the material's fracture toughness.

This test method is carried out mainly on special test substances.
