Explosive forming of plates

Plastic Deformation of sheet metal by detonation of an explosive charge.

The process

The workpiece in the form of a plate is placed on top of a die [1] of the required shape. Both the form and the plate is submerged in water so that it is covered by a wide margin. An explosive charge [2] is immersed in the water and placed just above the center of the plate.

Explosives commonly used are explosive chemicals, gaseous mixtures or other fuels.

When the charge detonates an intense blast deforms the workpiece by plastic deformation [3] so that it assumes the shape of the die. Air between the workpiece and the die is discharged through a vent passage [4] in the die as the plate is formed snugly against it.
