Direct mold casting

Forming process where a melt is passed through and solidified between two or more water-cooled rollers.

The process

A melt is continuously supplied through a ceramic nozzle [1] through two rotating rollers [2]. These are water-cooled and when the melt passes the rolls it is cooled and solidified, resulting in the completion of the forming process. To discourage the melt getting trapped in the rollers a release agent, typically made of graphite is applied to it.

The machine can be designed in several different ways, for e.g. the melt can be supplied horizontally, vertically from above or vertically from below.
