Composite spray molding

Plastic forming process where chopped fibers together with a polymer solution is sprayed onto an open mold.

The process

An open mold [1] is prepared by surface coated with an anti-adhesive.

A spray gun supplied with compressed air [2] sprays liquid polymer solution [3] onto the mold. Filaments [4] are supplied and chopped inside the spray gun to be thrown against the surface. Polymer Solution and fiber chips are sprayed onto the surface until the desired thickness is achieved. The solution is usually cured at room temperature and is then removed from the mold.

Advantages and disadvantages
In comparison with alternative methods
Low tool cost, low material costs
Suitable for small to medium production runs
Difficult to calculate mechanical properties
Difficulty controlling the volume and thickness
Emissions of styrene
Smooth surface finish on one side and rough on the other side
Unsuitable for precision work
