STS Drilling

Chip-breaking process where the hole is drilled with a tool that allows the chips to be evacuated by the coolant through a single channel.

The process

The drill tube [1] by which coolant is supplied fixed by pressure on the workpiece where a seal [2] ensures that this contact is tight.

A hollow drilling tool [3] passes through the drill tube with a rear part between the drill tube and the drill is sealed [4].

While the drill works, a coolant is pumped in through the drill tube [5] at high pressure, enclosing the drill. Broken chip from the cutting inserts are efficiently transported out of the liquid through the tool cavity [6].

Advantages and disadvantages
In comparison with alternative methods
Very deep holes can be drilled
Good surface finish
Holes can be produced with an interference
expensive tools
