Spline rolling

Forming where the spline pattern is rolled into the workpiece surface.

The process

Spline rolling can be done by either flat [A] or circular [B] tools. Workpiece is placed between the two flat surfaces of the dies then rolled between the two surfaces whose structure is gradually increased to full spline pattern. Compressive force arises as the tools are wedge shaped and presses the pattern into the workpiece. Cutting is usually cold and provide very strong splines and because of work hardening but also because of the favorable internal structure compared to for e.g. milled splines.

Advantages and disadvantages
In comparison with alternative methods
Good surface finish of splines, extra strong splines
