Shot peening

Material property-changing operation where shots are fired at a material so that its surface is partially deformed and there are residual stresses.

The process

A machine similar to that used for shot blasting, shoot little balls, usually made of steel, at a certain angle with the help of compressed air, on the surface of the material to achieve strain hardening.

The residual stresses arising increases the surface corrosion resistance, the fatigue strength and reduces the risk of cracking.

The balls must be spherical in order to avoid the risk of the material surface being damaged and so that the right amount of deformation is obtained.
