Selective Laser Melting and Milling, SLMM

Additive manufacturing method that uses a combination of laser melting and milling for the creation of solid 3D objects.

The process

Metal powder [1] is heated close to its melting point and spread on a building platform [2] using a roller [3]. A laser [4] draws a cross section of the 3D object into the powder material, whereupon the selected particles are completely merged to achieve 100% density. An end miller is used to finish the contour of the layer. This makes it possible to create inner structures with high surface finish which is important for by example flow channels for cooing of molds.

The construction platform is lowered corresponding to one layer thickness which is approximately 0.1mm, after which the process is repeated until the model is completed.

As the finishing is done together with the SLM, no additional finishing is required except from removing unmelted metal powder, which can be reused a limited number of times.

This method produces objects with very good finish.
