Roll peening

Material property-changing process in which a ball-shaped punch is pushed and pulled along the material to create residual stresses in the surface.

The process

A punch with a rolling ball whose tip is pressed against the surface of the workpiece while being moved laterally. Along the drawn line deformation occurs, causing residual stresses and resulting in hardening.

In addition to making the surface harder, it also increases its resistance to corrosion and fatigue resistance while reducing the risk of cracking.
