Polyjet Printing, PP

Additive manufacturing method in which a printer head builds objects using liquid thermoplastics that are cured with UV light.

The process

Object is built on a building platform which is gradually lowered during processing.

The part is made by a printhead [1], which switches between discharging the building materials in the form of molten thermoplastic [2] and a support material in the form of molten wax [3]. The support material is needed to build overhanging parts.

The process is the same as an inkjet printer and the construction polymer is solidified by UV-light after each layer deposition.

Based on the CAD model the object is printed layer by layer out of thermoplastic and wax until the finished part has been built up.

After printing is complete, the support material is removed by heating, which exposes the finished part. The surface finish is very high, which minimizes the need for post-processing.

Advantages and disadvantages
In comparison with alternative methods
Very high precision and surface finish.
