Orbital drilling

Machining where the drill head rotates both about its own axis and about the hole center axis.

Illustration of Orbital drilling

The process

The tool rotates about its own axis at a high speed and at low speed in a spiral motion around the hole center axis.

Cut material is removed by chip breaking. The operation is usually carried out vertically so as to have the chips continuously sucked up so it’s not packed around the tool.

Advantages and disadvantages
In comparison with alternative methods
Drastically increases the precision of the hole
Lower pressure force results in holes with fewer degrees when drilling metals
When drilling in composites it eliminates the problem of delamination
slow process
