Metal Injection Molding, MIM

Metal Processing where a powder mixed with binding agent is injected into a mold.

The process

Metal powders mixed with polymer and wax is kneaded to a pulp. By injection molding the mold [1] is filled with the mixture [2] solidified by pressure, which mechanically bonds the metal powder into a green body. The green body is then separated from the form and processed to reduce the binder before being sintered. The result is that the metal powder atoms are diffused and bonded together by a metallurgical bond.

The sintered body may then undergo various methods to further improve its properties. Some of the most common secondary operations are Carburization, infiltration, restamping, surface compression and impregnation.

Often done along with conventional processing methods such as milling, turning and grinding.

Injection molding
Plastic forming process where the plastic pellets are fed in and melted in a container with a rotating screw and pressed into a mold.
