Low plasticity polishing

Polishing process where a roller is pressed against the workpiece surface for pressing down unevenness and thus create a smoother surface which is additionally work-hardened.

The process

The tool in the form of a roll is rolled with constant speed along the workpiece surface under high pressure. The irregularities that occur in the workpiece surface is flattened out when the roll pressure is applied. The method is usually used for rotationally symmetric inner and outer surfaces.

By plastic deformation the residual stresses are induced in the entire surface resulting in hardening which increases hardness and fatigue resistance.
