Laser peening

Material property-altering process where the material is first coated and then bombarded with a laser to form powerful pressure waves that causes compressive stresses in the material to a specific predetermined depth.

The process

The material is coated with an ablative layer [1] and a thin film of water [2]. A laser beam with high energy that has been created in a laser generator is pushed against the material so as to create a plasma [3] adjacent to the material surface. There is then created a very strong pressure waves being brought down to a certain depth in the material so that compressive residual stresses are created which causes work-hardening of the surface. The laser beam is shot a number of times to obtain the right amount of pressure and tension in the right depth in the material.
