Ion implantation

Material property-altering process where the material is heated in a vacuum chamber and bombarded by a high-energy ion beam to create a harder surface without creating a coating.

The process

The material is placed in a vacuum chamber and heated to about 100° C. A high-energy ion beam containing a particular ion mixture bombards the surface of the workpiece.

The ions then diffuse rapidly into the material surface for a very small depth so that the surface of the material is cured and has a higher wear resistance, increased corrosion resistance and increased fatigue resistance without creating a coating on its surface.
