The process

The power source for the stroke vary in range from hammering and gunpowder charges to use of hydraulics or electromagnets. The choice of power source is controlled by the material type and desired results. The illustration shows the kind of electromagnetism where a current runs through a coil [1] and a magnetic marking pin [2] runs freely inside. The current creates a magnetic field that repels the marking pin which then pushes into the workpiece, leaving a depression in the surface corresponding to the mounted stamp [3].
