Hydroforming of plates

Forming process for deforming a metal sheet by use of a fluid filled pressure chamber.

The process

The work piece [1] is placed in a pressure chamber between a rigid punch [2] and a rubber diaphragm [3]. Then the pressure chamber is filled with fluid [4] after which the punch pushes the metal plate against the diaphragm and the pressure-filled chamber. The membrane encloses the workpiece completely, so that the pressure from the liquid forces the sheet to shape themselves around the punch.

The method can use liquid pressure up to 100 MPa and the high pressure in hydroforming can create very deep shapes, i.e., a higher percent transformation over traditional deep drawing processes.

Deep drawing
The molding process where by means of pressure and tensile stress a sheet metal blank is changed into a curved body.
