The process

The material is positioned on the lower die after which the top is pressed by a pressing force sufficient for the material to be sheared and stretched by a set of teeth. Upper tool stops before complete separation occurs after which it is lifted and brought half a tooth distance sideways. The sheet fed is pressed by the tool again so as to gradually create a mesh, called expanded metal.

The design of the teeth, varying lateral movement and the sheet feeder can provide a variety of shapes and appearances on the expanded metal.

Expanded metal is sometimes processed by rolling to produce a mesh having the same thickness as the plate.
