Electrochemical sinking

Electrochemical process in which an electrolyte is pumped under pressure through the tool quickly corroding the surface of the workpiece to a cavity shaped like the tool.

The process

By connecting to a power source, the workpiece acts as anode and the tool as cathode. A preheated electrolyte [1] is continuously supplied through the tool and the workpiece is dissolved by the accelerated corrosion resulting from electrochemical machining. Thus eroding an inverted form of the tool into the surface of the workpiece.

The tool thus never touches the workpiece but there is always a gap with a liquid between them. This means that the processed contour is always slightly larger than the tool [2].
