Boriding

Material property-changing process where a boriding mixture reacts with the material surface to create a hard surface.

The process

The material is surrounded by a boriding mixture and heated to about 900° C depending on the composition of the material. Boriding mixture commonly consists of mixed boron carbides including silicon carbide and aluminum oxides.

The boron in boriding mixture then react with the surface of the material so that hard metal borides are created.

After hardening the outer layer, boride is diffused deeper into the material which creates a second hardening layer.
