Ceramic inserts made by pressing and sintering ceramic powder
By pressing and sintering non-metallic ceramic powder, inserts are obtained which can withstand higher cutting speeds than, for example, High speed steel or cemented carbide cutters. However, ceramic cutter's brittleness and sensitivity to thermal shocks limit the area of use. Through fiber reinforcement, these weaknesses can be slightly reduced. There are inserts that are entirely made of ceramic and hybrid versions where only the cutting tip is made of ceramic.
