Core drilling

Illustration of Core drilling

Core drilling can be used to create through holes with reduced material removal

When drilling through holes with large diameters, the machining time can be reduced by using a core drill bit. This is because the material is only cut at the edge of the hole.

The method results in less cutting forces compared to twist drilling. As the residual material easily gets stuck in the drill housing, the tool is rarely used in automated processes.
Twist drilling
The twist drill is the most common tool used for creating a hole.
